There's so much to see and do when you stay with us. Use this handy guide of fun ideas for families this half term.
1. Enjoy the Warm Outdoor Pool.
With views across the peaceful valley to the White Horse of Westbury and drinks service by the pool, you’ll wonder why you ever considered going abroad and you might stop here, but if you want more fun, read on!
2. Take Part in the Holiday Family Activities at the Hotel
Join in the action packed programme of fun family activities (see below). Have you ever tried archery, toasted marshmallows over an open fire, made fresh pesto from the garden, created a mocktail or attempted towel art (a bit like origami but with towels)? Now is your chance!
3. Book the children into the Woolley Bears Den
This half term they can make pebble bugs, grow a seed in a jar, decorate biscuits and make finger flower prints (see schedule below) whilst you relax on the terrace with a glass of something chilled, enjoy a spa treatment or actually have an uninterrupted conversation with your better half.
4. Discover the Woolley Sheep Trail
The Woolley Sheep Trail is a sort of a treasure trail with a prize for each child that completes it! It's a great way to explore the grounds (which are a veritable adventure playground) when you first arrive.
There's also, in celebration of our 30th birthday, a ’30 things nature I-Spy’ for the littlies and a challenging ’30 things quiz’ for mum, dad and older offspring.
5. Go on a Historic Walking Tour of Bradford on Avon
On Sunday after breakfast, head down to Bradford on Avon for a historic walk by a blue badge guide. We’ve tried it and it is truly fascinating. So many historic tales packed into one small, and very pretty, town. Just ask at reception for more details.
6. Time to Spa
The Elemis Spa has a range of lovely treatments for true relaxation, glowing skin or pretty nails, be sure to book ahead. Parents can enjoy the sauna and steam room.
The children can also have fun in the spa nail painting session with our skilled spa therapists (see family activity schedule below).
7. Take a Country Walk that the Children will Love
You really are spoilt for choice around here and May is such a lovely time of year! To make it truly memorable add a bit of mystique and history, refreshments and fun stuff.
We recommend the tithe barn down in Bradford on Avon, where there are lovely walks by the canal and river, combined with playparks and cafes.
Keen on castles, abbeys and follies? The children will love Farleigh Hungerford castle, just a few miles away from the hotel, once again, there's some lovely countryside around for walks and icecreams on sale in the English Heritage shop. Then there’s Sham Castle on the hillside of Bath and Prior Park with one of the few surviving Palladian bridges, all part of the Bath Skyline walk, and finally, the unmissable Lacock Abbey and village….so beautiful and a favourite film location. Don’t miss the cauldron in the abbey, famed by Harry Potter films. National Trust and other cafes abound.
8. Go on a Safari!
Half and hour’s drive away is Longleat House & Safari Park. Ask about family discounts in advance with Reception and then go on safari for the day, meeting lions, tigers and monkeys!
9. Visit Beautiful Bath
The UNESCO Heritage city of Bath is 20 minutes away (or just a 12 minute scenic train ride from Bradford on Avon). There is so much to see and do here, but tops for a day trip with children are the Roman Baths. A brilliant interactive audio tour and video screens really bring this attraction to life. Follow by a walk up to the Royal Crescent and the Circus and a trip to a tea room for a Bath bun and then you’ll be ready to come back to the hotel to chill!
10. Take a Boat Trip on the Canal
Take a canal boat cruise from Bradford on Avon Wharf, down the Bradford Lock, past the 14th Century Tithe Barn and along the scenic Kennet and Avon Canal towards and over the Avoncliff Aqueduct. Ask at Reception for details.
11. Learn how to Paddleboard
Pre-book a Paddleboard lesson (suitable for adults and children 7+) on 1st June. Meet in the centre of Bradford of Avon and head for the river.
Can’t make the date? Alternatively hire a kayak and paddle your own canoe on any day of the week! Ask at Reception for details.
12. Go on a Family Cycle Ride
Prefer to be by the water rather than on it? Hire bikes and trailers and pedal your way to Bath and back. Ask Reception for details (pre-booking advised for half term dates).
13. Indulge in some artisan foods at the Bradford on Avon Food & Drink Festival
If you love all things foodie then come along to the first Bradford on Avon Food & Drink festival on 1st June. There’s fun for all the family with Masterchef demos, artisan food stalls and a fun dog show. Our Head Chef Jethro will be demonstrating on the day, along with Briony, this year’s GBBO champion.
However you choose to spend the holiday, we hope you have a fantastic one!
