Days Out Around Wiltshire

Longleat Safari Park
Longleat, as featured on BBC’s Animal Park is the biggest safari park around. It hosts a large drive-through safari park with all kinds of animals to see from giraffes and monkeys to lions and tigers.

It is also home to the famous Longleat House, currently occupied by Lord Bath. Longleat has many things to see and do for all the family and with their “passport ticket”, if you don’t get everything done in one day, you can always go back again for free.

Bowood House, Gardens and Adventure Playground
Bowood House is the magnificent stately family home of the Marquis and Marchioness of Lansdowne and was designed by Robert Adam in the 18th Century. Its beautiful gardens are designed to wear out even the most energetic children. Children will be kept amused for hours in Bowood’s large adventure park (even the adults can have a go!)

Stone Henge
Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located in the English county of Wiltshire. One of the most famous prehistoric sites in the world, Stonehenge is composed of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones. Archaeologists believe that the standing stones were erected around 2200 BC and the surrounding circular earth bank and ditch, which constitute the earliest phase of the monument, have been dated to about 3100 BC.

Avebury Stone Circle / West Kennet Long Barrow
Avebury is the site of a large henge and several stone circles in the English county of Wiltshire surrounding the village of Avebury. It is one of the finest and largest Neolithic monuments in Europe dating to around 5,000 years ago. It is older than the megalithic stages of Stonehenge, which is located about 20 miles to the south, although the two monuments are broadly contemporary overall. It lies approximately midway between the towns of Marlborough and Calne. West Kennet Long Barrow is one of the many prehistoric monuments that are part of the Avebury complex of Neolithic sites. It is one of the most impressive and well-preserved burial chambers in Britain, as well as being one of the most visited.

Wookey Hole Caves
Come and see the Witch of Wookey in Britain’s’ most spectacular caves. Visit our new Valley Of The Dinosaurs and wander through the prehistoric valley of the Dinosaurs!!! Wookey Pier has all the Fun of the seaside - under cover. Use real old pennies then take a trip to Wookey Hole Paper Mill, Britain’s last surviving Hand Made Paper Mill. Nature Trails will help you explore the Ebbor Gorge from the Mendip Hills with our easy to follow Nature Trails. Wookey Hole is the world’s oldest tourist attraction.

Cheddar Caves
The Cheddar Gorge is the site of the Cheddar Caves, where Britain's oldest complete human skeleton, Cheddar Man, estimated to be 9,000 years old, was found in 1903.

Two main caves are open to the public - the extensive Gough's Cave and the smaller Cox's Cave, named respectively after their discoverers. A caving experience is offered within Gough's Cave. There is a path of 275 steps, built up the side of the gorge, known as Jacob's Ladder after the Biblical description of a ladder to the heavens. A watchtower at the top provides a 360 degree view of the entire area and village. An open-top bus tour operates during the summer. Cheddar cheese is made in the lower part of the gorge.

Stourhouse House and Gardens
Stourhead is a world renowned property and garden belonging to the National Trust. The gardens are magnificent all year round and a haven to wear out all those excited children. You will be amazed by the different species of tress and plants. If the gardens alone are not enough for you, take a look around Stourhead house. You will be dazzled with its charming unique furniture, paintings and Regency library.

Westonbirt Arboretum
Westonbirt, The National Arboretum is one of the most spectacular tree gardens in the world. An historical collection of over 3,000 different trees and shrub species many of which are rare or endangered in their native lands. Covering six hundred acres, the arboretum is an inspiring place to relax, get back to nature and indulge your senses.

Brokerswood Country Park
A Wiltshire woodland country park, providing a perfect family day out with adventure playgrounds, narrow guage railway, gift shop and cafe. It’s part of the last remaining corner of the ancient forest of Selwood, which extended some 20,000 acres around the Wiltshire, Somerset and Dorset borders. Now there is an oasis of 80 acres of precious, natural woodland remaining. The Country Park has so much to offer: Visitors can spend a day and experience the Woodland railway, Adventure land, Play Trails, Heritage Centre and toddler undercover play area as well as simply enjoying the tranquility of woodland with the sights and sounds of nature all around them.
